Biplane on Battle Rock Beach 1920-1925
The JN4D, or Jenny, had basically an air speed indicator, compass and altimeter. Jennys built by Curtis Aircraft, were the primary training plane for Allied pilots in World War I. After the war, the planes were sold off cheaply to civilians, later know collectivley as Barnstormers because they would land their Jennys in a farmer's field and then use his barn for their hangar. To earn a living at this, or at least enough money to keep going for awhile, barnstormers offered rides at a price of 1 penny per pound of the passenger's weight. |
