Rick Cook Gallery
Three blocks west of us is the well established Rick Cook Gallery. Open since 1980, he has built up his Gallery's reputation around the craft of Wood Working and Contempory Art. It was 1976, when Rick moved to Port Orford, set up his own studio wood shop and apprenticed with a cabinet maker.
"Good furniture design and Fine sculpture seemed to go hand in hand."
Rick began his art quest while living in Laguna Beach, California during the 1960's. With an interest in painting, he spent time with, and was influenced by his painter father-in-law, Fredrick M. Rash.
After moving to Elmira, Oregon in 1970, Rick met and developed a student-mentor relationship with abstract sculptor Jan Zach. "Zach taught me a new ability to 'see'. Three dimension became my calling. Enjoying the physical part of my craft, working passionately, I produce several pieces from one flash of inspiration. With my pragmatic approach to Art, I feel functional sculpture the answer. However, my search for total freedom continues, and function begins to be less important."
